Make Up How To: Easy Office Look

Unless you wake up looking like Gisele Bundchen, you need to wear makeup to work. Luckily it’s easy to look completely put together with only 6 minutes of makeup time in the morning.  Try this look for a simple go-to:

- Under eye concealer (I recommend Lorac “double feature” available at sephora.com)

- Foundation (optional - some days I feel like I need it, other days I feel okay without it)

- Light beige or brown eye shadow

- Black liquid eyeliner (try: Mabelline Ultra Liner)

- Lip Stain (try: Armani lip stain)

- Mascara (try: L’Oreal Voluminous)

Apply under eye concealer and blend.  Apply a generous amount of the taupe or light brown eye shadow to your entire lid and up to your brow line.  Apply liquid eyeliner to your upper lid - a rather generous line.  Apply mascara to top and bottom lids.  Apply the lip stain.  Voila - a subtle and clean make up look for work.

Work Wear

My absolute favorite look for my conservative “Good Old Boys Club” job, is the pencil skirt with a fitted blouse.  It’s never too risque but always makes me feel feminine which is something that keeps me confident all day long.  I am partial to those with the bow at the collar like the classic Phillip Lim included below but I never say “no” to a silk top.  Since I’ve been on my shopping diet, I’ve tried to only buy things that can be worn to work or “out,” which the magazines always claim is easy, but unfortunately, I haven’t had much luck.  But I can take my pencil skirt off and keep this DVF blouse on with some skinny pants and go lots of places.  Dinner, date night, or even just a low key after work drink with friends.

Perfect Pencil Skirt

Goodbye comfy study clothes…

I am back at work today after over a week off since the CFA is O-V-E-R and I wanted to make sure I put a cute outfit together for my first day back.  I ordered a Phillip Lim skirt off of Gilt two weeks ago (if you haven’t tried one on, Phillip Lim makes the best skirts ever for work or going out) and paired it with a silk blouse I bought at the Bloomies sale. This Pippa blouse is fantastic (the brand in general is pretty great) and I wear it with mint green cropped boyfriend chinos for a casual look and this draped pencil skirt for a more dressy business look.

My favorite part of this outfit is a cheap-o American Apparel belt that i bought a few weeks ago for $40.  AA makes some great belts that are pretty inexpensive and come in colors that match just about everything.  (I wore a great baby pink leather basic belt with black skinnies to the CFA exam on Saturday with a blue AA t shirt tucked in and felt Pretty Polished throughout my ten hour testing session.)  Pairing a fun but not crazy colored belt with a solid skirt and blouse really can dress an outfit up!

Yahtzee!

The ever present challenge of finding work clothes that do not bore me to tears renders me wearing the same things from 9-5 all too often.  It’s a problem.  I was thrilled when I happened upon this Yumi Kim skirt at Urban Chic yesterday because purchasing a new work item a) makes work a lot better b) convinces me that fun work items do in fact exist c) confirms that corporate America doesn’t have to be SO corporate all of the time.

Yumi Kim makes this tulip skirt in a variety of colors and prints.  I opted for the black + white tile fabric because I can wear it almost year-round and well, it was the only one they had.  I scored this for 15% off at Urban Chic - check out the Yumi Kim website for the rest of the stock!

This runs a little small - I went with the Medium.

Shoes Stubbs & Wootton  by lauren Today is a perfect day for slippers.  What’s even more important and auspicious about these slippers is that I stole them from my mom, which means they were free.  Five finger discount at its finest.  Stole might be a bit harsh because technically I offered to steal them and then she offered to give them to me.  Important life lesson – always offer to steal things first & then maybe you will be rewarded for your generosity. So about these slippers.  They are really comfortable and they have turtles on them & they are super cute.  I wore them with a bright blue Kate Spade Isle skirt, white & blue striped theory shirt, and a pink Gap cardigan. In the past I’ve worn these with my floral A&O waisted play shorts and a Madewell knit sweater. I like them because they can add a preppy OR a funky twist.   Check out the entire Stubbs & Wootton collection here.  They are really more versatile than you’d think!

Red Hot  by Lauren I can’t wait to wear red this fall!  This color looks great on so many people and with so many things.  For some people, like my mom and sister, they have used red as a “neutral” in their wardrobe for years.  They enjoy adding that pop of color with a red bag, shoe, or leather jacket.  This season, Red, I’m picking up what you’re putting down.  I love the pairing with a bright pink that we’re seeing from fashion’s power houses like DKNY, Prabal Gurung, & Preen’s Resort 2012 wear.  Folks, this is a really easy look to copy and since it involves separates, you’re investing in the future of each garment. (That sounded convincing didn’t it). If color-blocking with red isn’t really your thing, red and black is back and hot this fall.  I know many of us have been averse to teaming these colors in the past, but trust me on this one.  To soften it up just a tad, I suggest using red with a pattern – like polka dots, or Equipment’s Croc Daddy blouse (pictured).
