Outfit Inspiration

Recently I was inspired by this photo of Blake Lively on the gossip girl set.  She is wearing Tibi pants, an unamed tank, and an Emilio Pucci sequin jacket.  Obviously the last item is a little out of the budget.  I accomplished a similar look by googling the Tibi pants and finding them on sale at theoutnet.com for $120. I found a joie tank that was silk with tiny silver metallic horizontal stripes on sale at 6pm.com for $60.  Lastly, I found the  most perfect black sequin jacket on sale at shopbop.com for $150 (50% off) by Club Monaco.

I complemented the look with a pair of Giuseppe Zanotti heels I snagged at Saks on Black Friday.  They are black velvet with silver crystals evenly scattered throughout the entire shoe.

The outfit was MAJOR (new lingo) and totally rocked for the cocktail event I wore it to.

Let the spring shopping binge begin…

It’s about that time of year where we begin building our wardrobes for the next big season.  I have jump started this occasion by trying on everything I like and picking and choosing the best pieces.  Here is favorite #1:

Alice and Olivia
Smocked Waist Play Shorts
($178)
www.shopbop.com

These shorts and their playful colors could make even the gloomiest of days, happy!

Fit Guide:  These shorts run true to size.  I always go up a size in shorts so I got a M, but pretty certain a S would have been just fine.

I envision myself wearing these with the “perfect chambray shirt” from Madewell ($68).

Yellow Shorts

My good friend, LJ, and I got to talking (last night) about what she would pair with these awesome yellow shorts from Dallin Chase if she purchases them.  Given my love for coordinating outfits, I couldn’t resist shopping around for the perfect complements.

There are a few things that I am thinking about these shorts:

1) The lace design is beautiful and you should show as much of it as possible so something that sits right at the top of the shorts or can be tucked in is probably best.

2) Their lovely yellow color is the perfect way to play around with the bright color blocking that we are seeing so much of for spring.  Spin that color wheel…

3) I’m going to guess that these shorts are little and fitted…a blousey top is best

Blue, purple, and pink are across from yellow…

Here are some pairing suggestions:

DVF Issie Top
$245

www.bloomingdales.com (Wait for Friends and Family for this one!)

Equipment Signature Blouse in Coral or Indigo
www.shopbop.com

I dont even want to list the price on these (okay, $208) but the material and construction put into each Equipment blouse has made this a fan favorite.  You would get your money’s worth on these.

Rebecca Taylor Punched Camisole
$245
www.shopbop.com
&
Yumi Kim - Myla Top

$127
www.yumikim.com

Yumi Kim

Annie Top

$138

I think the DVF Issie Top gets my vote as best for a dressed up look with the shorts!  Throw on some neutral shoes and you are good to go.

Color Code 1: Silk Pants

One thing that always excites us about spring and summer dressing is the re-introduction of COLOR.  After months of darks and neutrals, my eyes need this rejuvenation.  Color is more versatile than you’d think - you can mix and match the pieces and play around with the color blocking fad, or pair bright pieces with neutral counterparts if you’re feeling less bold.  For the next few weeks we will showcase the prettiest colored pieces out there

Kolae Blue Silk Pants

$198
www.revolveclothing.com

Rachel Roy - Cargo Pant
$375
www.shopbop.com

Diane Von Furstenberg - Georginne Pants
$265
www.shopbop.com or www.dvf.com

3.1 Philip Lim Cropped Tuxedo Trousers
$425
www.shopbop.com

3.1 Philip Lim Tapered Trousers
$375
www.shopbop.com

If you’re going to pair these items with neutrals, play around with different fabrics, textures, and pieces.  Layering over bright silk pants looks really cute - add a shimmery white or gray top and then throw on a leather jacket or blazer.  To experiment with color matching, stay tuned for our post on bright silk tops!

Wearing the 70s…

If you are dying to try the flared jeans trend before the weather is too warm, here are some tops to pair with your new flares.  Not to worry - if you only get one wear before the summer sweat kicks in, you will be rocking them all fall long.  (Note my justification to purchase anything at anytime).

Madewell Silk Epaulet Blouse
$110
www.madewell.com

A classic white blouse is always going to work for you.

Addison Story Scoop Dot Top
$110
www.shopbop.com
You could leave this untucked over the jeans for a more laid back, boho vibe.

Silk Bromley Blouse
$98
www.madewell.com

I have this blouse, the color is divine and the silk is perfect quality.

Equipment Sleeveless Signature Blouse
$180
www.saksfifthavenue.com
This peach color is so on point for summer and for the 70s trend we’re seeing right now.  Tuck this into light colored flare jeans and you’re so chic right now.

Hinge Tie Neck Blouse
$88
www.nordstrom.com
A friend of mine has this blouse and the chiffon is beautiful.  The tie neck is so 70s and would look perfect with light-wash flared jeans.  This could double at the office when you need to dress up.

Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent Oversized Blouse
$275
www.nordstrom.com

I obviously love the drama of this top; it’s a statement piece.  You could dress this down with flares or up with black pants or shorts.

3.1 Philip Lim
$375
www.nordstrom.com
I dont normally condone black and white prints with denim, but this blouse is so gorgeous I am willing to make an exception.  Stick to a dark wash, however.

On that note…

You probably want some jeans to wear with those tops I just mentioned.  To properly rock this trend, you need jeans that are high waisted.  I’d stay away from the low-rise boot cut jeans, particularly if you are no longer in your early 20s.  The ones pictured above are Textile by Elizabeth and James ($225) and are available on net-a-porter.com .  As far as I’m concerned, M.K. and Ash (if I may call them that) can do no wrong.  I find their stuff fits well - (read: for normal people) and their styles are totally on point.

Rich & Skinny
$198
www.shopbop.com

These Rich & Skinny’s are a great wash, and if they fit anything like the black skinnies that my sister has, you can order the size you WANT to order, not the size you need to order.  Ie., you wont feel bad about yourself when you try them on. It’s about time someone figured out how to do that.

Shopbop Lookbook Love

Two of PP’s favorite brands - Equipment & Current/Elliott- joined forces in a sick lookbook from Shopbop.  Our two favorite looks?  The bright pants & animal inspired blouse // black flares & neutral shirt.  This might just have us looking ahead to fall (that or the 103 degree temperature outside).

What Not to Wear if You’re Blake Lively

by Lauren & Whitney

So, this photo has been in circulation for awhile now but since T. Swift recently donned the same frock, it’s resurfacing all over the place in a who wore it best contest.  We’re not here to have said contest, but we have to say that this is just not working for B.

As much as I hate to say it, normally B can do no wrong in the wardrobe department.  Normally, Tibi is a universally great idea.  But everything from the length to the “too snug” fit, to her HAIR, (don’t get me started), is in YO face bad about this.  I (LW) am a sucker for pretty much any kind of animal print accessory – I don’t even like the shoes with this!  (Love the shoes, hate the styling).  B, your dress is too small.  I know that every girl hates “going up a size” but you should have, or maybe you shouldn’t have had a bacon, ham, egg, cheese, bagel sandwich before your Today Show appearance.  Either way, something had to give.
